One medical student's simple approach to becoming a doctor
Day by Day: music, mentorship and medicine

Day by Day: music, mentorship and medicine

I like music a great deal. Tuesdays are often the best day of the week because new tunes are released. I occasionally pick up a guitar and strum a chord or two for fun. I usually cover country songs to get my mind off medicine but this week I wrote one of my own to better understand it.

“Day by Day”

“Day by Day” is about mentorship in medicine. It’s an amazing profession full of people putting out a hand just when you need it most. Thanks to those so far who’ve been helping me along the way. I’ll be sure to pay it forward. The lyrics are:

“Day by Day”

A young 23 when he passed those tests,
and packed those bags.
Out on his own just trying do his best.
Working sun up ’til sundown.
Trying to care for that town.

When he heard,

“Hey son, why don’t I show you the way.
We can work it out together, day by day.
Keep your head down and do it right.
Then we’ll make it to the other side.”

For forty-some years they worked like that,
side by side.
They always knew they had each other’s backs.
Working sun up ’til sun down.
You should have seen how they helped that town.

They swapped,

“Hey, why don’t I show you the way.
We can work it out together day by day.
Keep your head down and do it right.
Then we’ll make it to the other side.”

The thing about life that a doctor should know,
is it has a way of ending, yeah we all got to go.

He cared for him from
Sun up ’til sun down
Just like he cared for that town.

He heard,

“Hey, son now that I showed you the way.
You can do it on your own now day by day.
Keep your head down and do it right.
You can make it to the other side.”

Then he saw a young girl, 23.
She was just like him.
Trying to make her way.
He found the words to say.

“Hey girl, why don’t I show you the way.
We can work it out together day by day.
Keep your head down and do it right.
Then we’ll make it to the other side”

Day by day.
Head down, right.
Day by day.
You’ll be fine.
